WTF Did I Do Last Night? A Sobering Look at the Mornings After Drinking

WTF Did I Do Last Night?
That was the first thought to pop into my head most mornings after a night (and let’s be honest — often a crafty day) of drinking.
Even if it wasn’t a full black-out moment, I’d usually drunk enough to have sketchy, unreliable recollections of the night before.
And it didn’t even take an event or outing to get there.
In fact, most of the time?
It happened at home.
🙄 The bottle of wine I’d consumed visibly through dinner and TV
🙄 The other one hidden in the linen cupboard “just in case” between chores
🙄 A few artful swigs before bed — and if it was one of those nights, a couple more mouthfuls before passing out
🙄 And God forbid I woke at 1am… because that would mean a sleepy stumble to the fridge for a top-up of my liquid anaesthetic
Cue: Unexplained broken bones and mystery bruises. 🙈
The Real Damage? The Morning After
It wasn’t just the hangover.
It was the anxiety.
The shame.
The self-interrogation that would begin the moment I opened my eyes.
And depending on the answers?
That would dictate just how bad the emotional fallout would be.
The Morning Questions That Haunted Me:
❓ Did I argue with my husband?
❓ What did the kids see?
❓ Who have I text?
❓ Why am I not in my bed?
❓ What did I commit to?
❓ Where do I need to send my apologies?
And if the answers were too hard to bear?
Sometimes I’d need a morning “leveller” just to get through the anxiety.
I still carry some PTSD around this stuff.
Some mornings, the recollection is worse than not remembering at all.
But I’m getting there.
One small, forgiving step at a time.
And when I get asked for the 50-millionth time whether I miss drinking?
“Nah. I’m pretty good with life as it is, thanks.”
